Nonprofit boards play a critical part in the governance of nonprofits. They are accountable for strategic planning and oversight, and financial stewardship. The Board is responsible for ensuring the organization’s transparency with donors and community members. This is not a simple job. The Board is faced with many challenges, that require a substantial commitment of time and resources from the board. It’s crucial to have the most qualified people on your Board.
A strong board is composed of people with different backgrounds, abilities and perspectives that are aligned with the mission of the organization. This will provide the Board with a broad range of knowledge and experience that allows it to make informed decisions and help guide the organization in the right direction. The Board must regularly assess its own performance and effectiveness as well as provide regular training.
The Board must also be meticulous and understand the big picture. This includes assessing to which the financial activities are in alignment with the budget and determining the price of services and programs, and whether they are cost-effective, and implementing internal controls to prevent theft and loss or confusion.
The Board should be prepared to serve as advocates and ambassadors of the organization. They should help the Executive Director create and manage the public brand for the organization. They should be available to the media and community and willing to speak on behalf of the organization when needed.
